Mixing sweet and savory flavors is the rage right now in baking.

I found a great recipe from Nestle for bakers who like mixing a little spiciness into their cocoa-based chocolate cookies.

This batch uses Mexican ancho chile powder to light up the taste buds a little.

    Another pickle recipe

Last week, I included a recipe for Ginger Read in Bartow, who wanted to make "made-over bread-and-butter pickles" at home using kosher dill pickles.

In the meantime, I got a recipe that incorporates mushrooms and garlic into the mix.

Kathleen Cook of Hudson says she loves using recipes from her mother, Sue Cook, "especially now that she has passed away."

A friend gave Kathleen's mom a pickle recipe several years ago, and now Kathleen enjoys making them, although she prefers to leave out the garlic and mushrooms.

"Everyone who tastes them loves them," Kathleen says. "I hope Ginger in Bartow can use this recipe."

    Pasta salad wanted

Lou Burnside of Tampa would like to make the penne pasta salad made at the Carrollwood Deli.

"Before I retired, we would order sandwiches and their pasta salad along with their cookies with a special frosting to dip them in," Lou writes. "I have never had such a good pasta as theirs and would love to make it at home."

    Searching for slaw

Ken Thompson of Wauchula wants to make a slaw recipe similar to the version served at the Blue Bird restaurant in Winter Haven.

The Blue Bird was a drive-in that operated in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

"I was told within the last few years that someone in Auburndale made this slaw, and it was served at some city craft fair," Ken writes. "It would be a seller to those of us who remembered it."

    Leftover requests

Eva Ebert wants the recipe for the mixed greens salad with vinaigrette and grilled chicken that she used to enjoy at the now-closed El Pilon Restaurant in South Tampa.

Karen Johnson says she wants to make the house salad dressing from ABC Pizza.

DeeAnn Kirby wants to make the recipe for shrimp (or chicken) with Czarina sauce served by Circles restaurants in Tampa.

Ellen Scudiero of Holiday wants the recipe for fried almond shrimp served with orange sauce that was served at the Leverock's in New Port Richey

Bob Moore wrote recently asking for the recipe to make a steak sandwich like the one served at the former Mac and Ivey's on Henderson Boulevard in the 1960s.

Connie Rott wants the fried beef tips recipe served with yellow rice at J.D.'s in Ybor City.
