Polk County officials have launched an investigation following the death of an inmate Sunday afternoon.
Robert Joseph Lorenz, 50, was standing in line waiting to receive his lunch at 11:55 a.m. Sunday when he began to slump over. Before he fell to the floor, a deputy caught Lorenz.
The jail's medical staff responded, transporting Lorenz to the infirmary. During that trip, he became unresponsive. Lorenz, of Lakeland, was then taken to Bartow Regional Medical Center at 12:33 p.m. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was declared dead at 12:57 p.m.
Lorenz was originally arrested on Dec. 13 for trespassing at a CSX property, deputies said. He was given probation, but violated the terms five weeks on a petit theft charge. Lorenz was re-arrested on Feb. 6 and had remained in custody until his death.
