TAMPA - Development experts from the Urban Land Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based planning think tank, will offer advice to city officials about revitalizing the area along the Hillsborough River north of downtown.
The visiting experts will offer their report at 9 a.m. today in a public presentation at the Tampa Convention Center, Room 19.
City officials want to redevelop the riverfront north of Interstate 275 and east of Rome Avenue. The site includes about a mile and a half of river frontage.
They are working with the Tampa Housing Authority, which controls the North Boulevard Homes, a housing project that takes up a chunk of the 140 acres there.
"This will give us a roadmap moving forward to jump-start redevelopment and stimulate the investments to revitalize a key area of the riverfront," Mayor Bob Buckhorn said.
The area also includes a city public works yard, which the city council recently asked the Department of Environmental Protection to declare a brownfield.
That designation, if accepted by the federal Environmental Protection Agency, could open the door to federal funds for cleaning up the property.
